Tokyo is a huge city and
it has two underground
systems: the Tokyo Metro
and the Toei Subway.
Together, they have
285 stations, 13 lines and
304 km of track. They
carry 3.4 billion people every
day! The first metro line in
Tokyo opened in 1927.
Shinjuko station is the
busiest metro station in the
world. It has 200 exits and its
own app to help people
find their way around!
The Paris metro carries
1.5 billion people every year.
It hasn’t got a lot of track –
just 214 km – but it has
303 stations. This means
that many stations are only
about half a kilometre apart.
It opened in 1900 and there
are 16 lines.
Many Paris metro stations
have got beautiful designs.
When you go into the Arts et
Métiers station, it’s like being
in a submarine!
The New York subway has
over 1,000 km of track.
There are 422 stations and
21 main lines. It opened in
1904 and now carries
1.7 billion people a year.
Some people think that
one station, Astor Palace, is
haunted. They say that late
at night, a ghost train comes
through the station and if
you get on the train, it takes
you back in time to the early
1900s!
