Read the following passage. Decide if the statements from 1 to 4 are True or False and choose the
correct answer (A,B,C or D) for the questions 5 and 6
They call New York “the Big Apple”. Maybe it’s not exactly like an apple, but it’s certainly very
big. There are too many people, that’s the problem. The streets are always full of cars and trucks,
you can never find a parking place.
If you have enough money, you can take a taxi. New York cabs are yellow. They look all the same.
But the drivers are very different. Some were born and raised in New York, but many are
newcomers to the United States. A few drive slowly, but most go very fast. Cab driving is a difficult
job. It can be dangerous, too. Thieves often try to steal the drivers’ money. Drivers sometimes get
hurt.
17
If you don’t want to get a taxi, you can go by bus, or you can take the subway. The subway is
quick, and it’s cheap, but parts of it are old and dirty. Light doesn’t always work, and there is often
fire on the track. On some subway lines, there are new, clean, silver trains. But you can’t see the
color of the old trains easily. There is too much dirt and too much graffiti, inside and outside.
Decide whether the statements that follow are True or False
1. They call New York "the Big Apple" because it has too many apples.
_____________
2. You may find it hard to see the color of the old trains.

Local Songkran celebrations in Bangkok, Thailand
Songkran is the welcoming of the Buddhist new year in Thailand. It’s also celebrated across Southeast Asia,
albeit under different names and on slightly different dates. In Thailand, it usually occurs over a long weekend
in mid-April. Festivities include parades, markets, and dance performances, but the festival is best known for
its water fights.
In temples, it’s customary to wash Buddha images with water to prepare for the new year. Outside, this tradition
has evolved into a country-wide water fight, with entire communities hitting the streets with water pistols, water
balloons, and buckets of water to hurl at each other. Passers-by aren’t exempt, so you’ll quickly find yourself
soaking up the celebrations (quite literally) — plus, the water is a refreshing respite from April’s dry heat.

43
When I studied English in New York, I lived with a family in an area called SoHo. It is an interesting area. Someone
told me that it is south of West Houston Street, so the name comes from ‘South’ and ‘Houston’.

family, especially at mealtimes, and, of course, on the weekends, when they took me sightseeing in the city. I think
I Iearned more in my homestay than at the school.
My homestay family in New York was great for learning English because they had two young children, two
grandparents, and a dog. I heard so much language between the family and to the pet. And they all talked to me,

correct answer (A, B, C or D) for the questions 5 and 6
ENERGY SOURCES
Melissa Valentine, October 10
I just finished a report about different types of energy for school. First, we found out about different types
of energy. Next, we had to find out if they are renewable or non-renewable.
Renewable energies, like wind power, solar power, and hydropower, will never run out. We can use them
again and again. Coal power and natural gas are non-renewable energy sources. One day there will be no
more coal or gas to use. They will run out.
Our city uses a lot of coal and natural gas. We don’t use a lot of renewable energy. I think we should try
our best to help save environment, so we should use more renewable energy sources in our city. I want to
find out how I can help to make a change!
Decide whether the statements that follow are True or False
1.
Coal power and natural gas are renewable energy sources.
________
2.
